The Shadow Riders Louis L'Amour 9780816135295 Books

I love Louis L'Amour, Tom Selleck and Sam Elliot. Throw them together and you get a great movie.
Westerns, when written by the likes of Louis L'Amour, are a wonderful read. I started reading his books when I was a little kid living with my grandparents in Oklahoma. We were country people and our culture was so similar to what L'Amour described that it was easy for me to place myself in his stories.
The few that have been made in to movies don't disappoint (except one, but not for bad writing-just choice of actors). This particular book (movie) is about the chaos that ensued when the Civil War ended. Two brothers return home to Texas to find their sisters as well as one of the brothers' finance have been kidnapped for sale to Mexican slavers. They promptly go in search of the girls to rescue them.
Louis L'Amour's heroes are somewhat predictable, but the stories are always good and add two of the best looking TV Cowboys (Tom Selleck and Sam Elliot) in and one is in for some great entertainment. And (and this is important) no sex, cussing, and virtually no blood/guts.
Great movie even for kids.

The Shadow Riders Louis L'Amour 9780816135295 Books Reviews

I just saw the movie version of Shadow Riders again and thoroughly enjoyed it. The movie had plot differences from the book, but still remained a good yarn. The differences led me to reread the original book and It was excellent, too. Now those are Westerns! (No Cowboys and Indians, just Cowboys and Outlaws) I hope you enjoy them as much as I have.
I enjoyed the story. The Traverns reminded me of the Sackett family. A lot of similarities in character and the code their families lived by. Today I don't see much character or code in modern life. Today's code seems to be earn as much as you can and only think about yourself.
I liked it the book was spot on about Texas in a historical since how bad things truly were after the Civil War . I gave it 4 stars only because there are 5 main characters and while it focuses on 3 mainly it could have given a little more insight on the other 2 and a lot of the minor characters played bigger roles more depth needed
Sam Elliot, Tom Selleck and Jeff Osterhage, are great as brothers in this movie, and Ben Johnson as their uncle provides even more star power and fun. They are out to rescue family and loved ones taken by force, and if force is necessary to get them back, these men are the ones for the job. Everyone in my family loves this movie and it's a regular "go to" for those nights when there is just nothing to watch on television.
This is one of those comfort movies for me. It is a good story, fun characters and good rapport between the actors. A little old fashioned, but something you can watch with the kids. Good triumphs over evil, love wins in the end and family is everything. Full of lovable rogues with honor. I never get tired of this story. Particularly like how they portray the relationship between brothers and love Ben Johnson as uncle jack.
Louis L'Amour chronicled the Old West in a way that few have done. But Tom Selleck and Sam Elliott add a sly sense of humor and fun to the tales for viewing. The two of them made a number of Louis L'Amour novels into TV Movies both together and separately. These movies celebrated, as did L'Amour's novels, the tall iconic figures that also usually populate Randolph Scott/ Budd Boetticher westerns.
Code and family feature prominently in this tales. Entertaining to watch and fun to recognize the additional group of famed character actors that work in them. War and Peace? Absolutely not, and proud of it.
1982's Television movie "The Shadow Riders" pairs Tom Selleck and Sam Elliot as brothers Mac and Dal Traven, returning to Texas at the end of the Civil War, only to find a band of renegade soldiers has kidnapped their brother and two sisters, and Dal's fiancée. The two brothers set out in pursuit, along the way springing from jail their wayward Uncle Jack (Ben Johnson) for assistance. The trail leads all the way to a remote camp in Mexico and a face-off with former Confederate soldiers and Mexican bandits.

There is plenty of drama, but the delivery is often tongue in cheek. Selleck and Elliot are entirely believable, and fun, as brothers. Katherine Ross is excellent as Kate, Dal's feisty once and future fiancée. Jeff Osterhage has a good role as the younger brother. The plot, based on a Louis L'Amour novel, should hold everyone's interest, especially the action scenes aboard a train. Recommended as good entertainment.
