Neela Victory Song Girls of Many Lands Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni Troy Howell 9781584855972 Books Reviews
This book is excellent! Neela, who is adventurous and brave (something very important in a good heroine), takes a dangerous trip to try to save her father with the aid of an intriguing freedom fighter during the era of protest over British rule. Every girl I have recommended this title to loved it, and I can't see why anyone would think this book is just "about a girl who doesn't want to get married" (like my fellow reviewer). I recommend it without reserve. It is an exciting story, that will interest the reader in Indian culture.
This book contains quite a bit of information about the politics of India at a very tumultuous time; the information is presented in a way to make it extremely accessible to young women, which is an impressive feat. It seems to me like a lot of the Pleasant Company's main characters are somewhat rebellious, which makes them more attractive to a modern audience but also probably makes them less realistic. However, supporting characters, like Neela's sister in this book, let us view what more traditional young women would be doing as the action (in this case, Neela risking everything familiar to save her family and help her country) took place.
Like the stories of "American Girl" series, Victory Song provides a glimpse of a tumultuous time and place through the eyes of a brave and spirited heroine. I'm not sure how realistic it would be for a 12-year old Indian girl in 1939 to run away from home dressed as a wandering minstrel and help her father break out of prison. However, it makes a great story. Victory Song deals with some challenging historical issues without unseemly language or "inappropriate" material, so it's a good choice for preteens who have moved beyond simpler stories. It's also a very readable introduction to a part of history that most American kids never hear about. Five stars for Neela!

12 year old Neela has lived a simple life in her village in Bengal. The British still have rule over India, and though sometimes she hears bad things about them, life is good for her. At Neela's older sister's wedding, many things change. A group of freedom-fighters interrupt the ceremony, and ask for donations. Some people don't support the freedom-fighters, and have the belief that the British are doing them good. Heated discussions spring out as a result, and Neela is a little bit worried. She is even more so after her Baba announces that he is going to Calcutta, to talk to a non-violence group who wants to establish peace in India. The reason this frightens Neela so much is that Calcutta is one of the British headquarters, and many violent things have been going on. Later on, after tested to see what she needs to do, Neela runs away to Calcutta to rescue her Father. Though, the British live in fancy homes and talk nicely, they treat the Indian people like dirt. While everyone else is in poverty, they are relaxing in their posh lifestyles. Unfortunately, as Neela finds out, some Indians amazingly support the British. Neela makes daring efforts, and has an adventure that would last generations!
This book is very well written and easy to follow. It tells the story of a 12 year old East Indian girl named Neela who has to rescue her father from the hands of the British. I am a 13 year old girl and have read only one other book written by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni. I admire the way that Chitra writes and I enjoyed this beautiful book. It is an exciting story that is packed with interesting facts about India and Indian households.
The only negative thing about this book is that the word "damn" is mentioned twice.
Overall, though, "Victory Song" is a great book!
I'm at the beginning of it
Interesting and well written historical book about a Bengali girls adventures during the onset of India's independance. Discusses dowry and girls being married at age 15.
Daughter loves the book!
