Grade CAlthough World War II has just ended, ten-year-old Sally is still preoccupied with Hitler. She writes stories about her cousin, who died in his camps, and even thinks her new neighbor just might be Hitler in disguise.
I loved bright, inquisitive Sally and all her creativity. I too wrote stories of peril when I was her age. STARRING SALLY J FREEDMAN AS HERSELF is a slice of life, period piece, one of Judy Blume's earliest and most autobiographical novel. As an adult, I enjoyed the story, but I have a hard time seeing most kids enjoying this story, because almost nothing happens. Today's kids seem more interested in books with more tension and action. Even Sally's dynamic personality can't make make up for a nonexistent plot.
Sally's age probably means the YA crowd won't be drawn to STARRING SALLY J FREEDMAN AS HERSELF, which is too bad because a discussion of post WWII America for Jewish families would dovetail nicely into history lessons. I wish Blume had delved into some of the antisemitism any Jewish people experienced as well.

Starring Sally J Freedman as Herself Judy Blume 9780689840890 Books Reviews
One of my favorite childhood books. Just as good as I remember it. I've always had a bit of a dark imagination & Sadly does too
I give this book a five star rating becuz it is such a fun and imaginative book about a 10 year old. I think anyone in between the ages 10-14 would enjoy this book. It is a life about a girl named Sally J. Freedman who lives a life full of boys, friends, and a wild imagination in Miami Florida. It is after World War II and has a lot of imagination gone wrong and too wild that makes it absolutely hilarious time after time again.
I got the print version when I was younger and loved the book. It has lots of interesting characters and plots in it. It's one of many books that I love to read over again. A very good book for any age.
The story itself was fine, but the swear words and sexual references are over the top, totally inappropriate for this age level.
I read this book when I was Sally's age, probably ten times. I'm 32 years old now and had an inkling to revisit Sally's curious, poignant, and hilarious lens of the world, inscribed so tightly in her family and friendships, but speaking into a deeper awareness of the unknown, and what children do when confronted with a terror they never really catch a glimpse of. What I've discovered, 22 years after my initial obsession with Sally J. is exactly the same as it was so long ago. This book was and remains a soothing embrace of the fears and triumphs we encounter in life, as children who are never certain they've really reached adulthood.
This is a children's classic. Sally's reality is outwardly different than that of my 10-year old daughter, but her internal reality, that includes a bit of blurring between reality and fiction, endless curiosity about the world and lots of humor, is so similar that the book engaged her completely. I loved this book as a girl and it was great to see my daughter enjoying it as much as I did. One of the classics!
Read this book probably close to a thousand times as a child so I purchased it as a nostalgic item so I could reread it. I just wish my 4th grader loved to read as much as I did in the late 80s/early 90s. Set in the WW2 era, a Jewish family from New Jersey moves to Florida due to a child's illness. I love Sally's imagination
