Here's the question that this book raises for me: even if you find a romance with a person who understands you and may be your best friend, if there was no spark in the beginning, can that passion develop? Even if you love someone, if there's no push toward a sexual relationship, should you have one? Or: is an essential component of a successful relationship missing? In this book, the amnesiac high school senior wakes up to learn she has had a boyfriend and they have been intimate with each other. In the absence of memories to remind her, she spends time with him and wonders: what did I see in him? He is the character who represents a relationship based on their shared interest in tennis and pure physical attraction. In my experience, athletes are drawn to other athletes, and "popular" kids seek each other out for relationships. Maybe after a person loses his or her memory, those connections seem arbitrary. That's the premise of this book. The amnesiac has a chance to step back and evaluate her choices, and is handed a do-over because her mind is a blank slate. Two other male characters the amnesiac meets represent a creative love of the mind and spirit, and a love based on shared activities, open communication, honesty and mutual respect.
Four stars for this book for good life lessons well-told. If only the finale relationship had held some magnetism, some attraction, I would go all in with the stars.

I liked all of these characters - from the beginning. By the end I liked them even more!! Another win for Gabrielle Zevin !!
I skimmed the reviews before purchasing this item and was vaguely satisfied with the positive reviews. However after reading it I'm more than a little disappointed. The characters are terribly underdeveloped (primarily James, whom I found unbearably moody and melodramatic) and just stupid. It's highly unrealistic in regards to Naomi's dad allowing her to travel abroad with little knowledge of her whereabouts in the first place, and a lot of the events seem poorly constructed, as if no effort was invested in writing certain scenes. The beginning had some potential, I won't lie. The plot seems scattered and rushed in some places and plodding in others. James is a jerk and Naomi is naive and an idiot. She barely knows the boy and she "trusts" him and "loves" him, but he's an absolute coward. He's a walking self proclaimed sob story that just wants people to feel bad for him, which I found annoying. It just…all around I think lacked a lot. Unfortunately I wouldn't recommend this.
I don't plan on giving away any details here but this was really a great read that also gave me a great new catalog of some older songs to reminisce to. I was afraid that it would be a bit too YA Novel but it seemed to grasp the concept of a novel about a teen-life instead of a teen fan-fiction about a teen life; which was appreciated.
MEMOIRS OF A TEENAGE AMNESIAC is a beautifully crafted story of a girl who loses the last four years of her past and gains a new life, a new future, a new Her.
Zevin tells an emotional tale that is sure to steal your heart. Characters are well developed and fully fleshed out. Naomi is easily a real person as you take this deep heartfelt, sometimes humorous, sometimes tragically sad, but completely authentic journey with her...
"Above all, mine is a love story.
And like most love stories, this one involves chance, gravity, a dash of head trauma.
It began with a coin toss.
The coin came up tails; I was heads.
Had it gone my way, there might not be a story at all. Just a chapter or a sentence in a book whose greater theme had yet to be determined. Maybe this chapter would have had the faintest whisper of love about it, but maybe not.
Sometimes, a girl needs to lose."
This is one of those books you (ironically) will never forget.
I read Zevin's _Elsewhere_ at the urging of my (then) 12 year-old niece and was a little surprised to like it as much as I did. I generally love YA novels, but the premise put me off until I'd let it suck me in. I'd worried about icky sweetness, but I could have saved my energy. It's off-center and very good.
I happened across _Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac_ about six months later, and I just loved it. Zevin does reality even better than she does the unreality of _Elsewhere_. Well, I assume it's reality. I find good parents and functional, if broken, families to carry a fantasy air for me, but these felt like they could exist, fairly near our planet, too. Beyond the loving parents, though, it's the portrayals of the teenage amnesiac and her peers that sold me on the book. I knew a James once, although it was an even messier situation and lacked a happy ending. I'm pretty sure Naomi's walked this earth, too, or does in some quantum variant, along with Will. They're smart, creative, energetic, good kids who are the objects on which life practices its blows. Their responses range from errors to misunderstandings to loving connection. They're people living a story and people you want to follow through that story. I liked them.
Thanks to Zevin for this good read. I'm definitely passing it on to my (now) 13 year old (going on l7 year old) niece. Good stuff.
More like 4.5 stars.
Truly ridiculous I stayed up this late to finish this book. I have finals and yet I stayed up I just needed to finish.
This book was very good. A++++++ for the best portrayal of adoption I have ever read in a book ever. I loved how the amnesia was portrayed. We got just enough info from the past balanced with complete oblivion that it really embodied the amnesia experience well without being excessively confusing.
I really did like this book, I think it was really well done and so intriguing. GREAT READ!!!
Didn't get 5 stars because I don't think this book is particularly life changing or is going to stick with me particularly long or in a very very strong way. But it was so good, such a great read.
And now I sleeps.
