This is a book detailing briefly nine little known Confederates. While it states at the opening that these men do not have full biographies written about them, this is no longer the case with most of the men in this book. This may be, in part, due to this book as many of the biograpies now available came after this book was published.

Richard Taylor has at least one full length bio by T. Michael Parrish.
Turner Ashby has a few bios published, most of which are out of print with two readily available.
Patrick Cleburne has had at least three bios, with two very recent ones available.
Lt. Charles W "Savez" Read now has two very recently published bios available.
Col. Willie Pegram has one bio that I know of that is currently available by Peter S. Carmichael.
Lucius Northrop has one bio that is currently out of print by Jerrold Northrop Moore.
Henry Hotze has an edited volume of his selected writings available.
E.P. Alexander only has his memoirs and edited Personal Recollections by Gary W. Gallagher published.
William Mahone has only one biography available by Blake Nelson.

I have read many full biographies about Civil War Generals and after reading this book, I have an even greater interest in reading more about most of these men. While all are interesting, Patrick Cleburne stands out as being an under-appreciated military genius who was not afraid to speak his mind even at the cost of his military advancement. Having read a bio of John Bell Hood, I am eager to read about Cleburne's battles and death at Franklin, TN after Hood's ordered his army to attack. Another bio in this book that was very entertaining was "Savez" Read. Read had a short naval career, but a highly effective one. His post-Civil War adventures are even more intersting. It seems to me that "Savez" Read must have served as the inspiration for Captain Jack Sparrow who also says "savez" after everything he says. "Savez" Read got this nickname for his constant use of this word after everything he said. I always find it interesting to read about men who are failures or are hated by everyone. Lucius Northrop and Henry Hotze provide an interesting look into the Confederate Government and the civilian side of the Civil War.

This book serves to whet your appetite in order to decide which people you'd like to read more about. I am more eager now than ever to read about Cleburne, Taylor, Mahone and "Savez" Read.
